Kaiser Permanente Downey Medical Center

While the aesthetic placement of artwork
is important, equipment and regulatory needs for walls
initially designated for artwork can appear in the
building and licensing phases. To ensure accurate
placement and proper scale of more than 700 works, we
did more than simply survey site plans, we regularly
walked this 677,000 square foot facility while under
construction. Because we worked closely with the
architect and project managers throughout the project
and had a proactive presence on the site, very little
art placement adjustment had to be made at installation
two years after starting this project. Completed in
September 2009, each floor and department of the
hospital has a distinctive look, while an overall theme
centers around the aviation history of the site,
originally the location of aircraft, Apollo, and Space
Shuttle manufacturing.
